Fashion

In my opinion, the sweatshirt has become a wardrobe staple, especially here in the UK where the weather is so variable. When it's too hot for full on knitwear but cool enough to need something on your shoulders.....enter the sweatshirt! Up until now the sweatshirt has be a sportswear item kept for PE/the gym or those super cool girls who can rock the Bella Hadid sportswear look. However it has moved into everyday style for many in the last few years, boosted by lockdown and a industry move to much more relaxed style trends. I was unsure if it was an item I could get on board with at first but actually I now have a few styles that work so well on a more casual day. I tend to gravitate to simple clean styles with a slogan or motif (easier to style with a printed dress or skirt) rather than an all over print however I will make acceptations for something beautiful.

I have rounded up my favourite styles below, from the high-street as well as a couple of independent brands.

Let me know your favourite piece...

The Sweatshirt - my top picks

A whimsical style to start off my picks, featuring my favourite Disney characters Stitch & Angel. Primark have such a great selection of sweatshirts, especially Disney themed styles at great prices. I also love a blush pink one with a beautiful line drawing of Thumper the rabbit on. A great budget option, especially if like me you aren't sure if a sweatshirt fits with your style.

Grey Rebel Slogan Sweatshirt - £69 Mint Velvet

Loved this style, grungy and a little more rough than the other styles featured. This shade of grey works well with lots of colours & would work well teamed with jeans, dresses or skirts and everyone loves a bit of rock & roll (well I do at least).

Pink & Neon Pink Leopard & Lightning Bolt - £50 Scamp & Dude

A very statement option, but I do enjoy a bold leopard print especially in pink. Cute too as you can get a similar mini me version to twin with your little sidekick. Also worth noting that Scamp & Dude have an amazing inclusive size run - from XS to 3XL.

Louisa Embellished Cropped Sweatshirt - £155 Sophie Pittom

The most expensive piece from this roundup, but very unique and beautiful. Each piece is hand appliqued so each one is unique. Sophie Pittom is a new brand on my radar, I discovered it through Instagram and I loved the unique embellishment detailing. Something quite romantic and girly balanced out with a simple boxy grey sweatshirt. It is also available in a beautiful baby pink.

The Sweatshirt Ivory - £60 Boden

A great classic style, simple Ivory base but with a cheeky rainbow stripe on the sleeves. Ideal to team with an easy jeans & trainers look, or style like the model with a pair of khaki chinos. Boden have this style available in other prints including a bold statement floral.

Saturday' Bouclé Slogan Sweatshirt - £16 @ Sainsburys

An unexpected find whilst doing my weekly shop! always worth a look as the supermarkets are giving the traditional fashion brands a run for their money, especially at this amazing price point. Slogan sweatshirts are cute and cheeky, plus this colour combo is gorgeous for spring/summer. A classic crew neck with rainbow bouclé lettering which adds some texture to a simple piece.

Pink City Slogan Sweatshirt - £69 Mint Velvet

I actually own this one, fell in love with the beautiful shade of pink (not to light and washed out, but not full on Barbie) with the burgundy lettering, an usual combination. Loving the city slogan trend and this was something a little different to anything else I've seen before. I also like the fact it is a summer weight sweatshirt, no furry inside making it ideal for warmer days and also a little easier to tuck in.

Pre-loved has become a buzz word, especially within the fashion industry, over the past few years and is fast becoming the favourite method of the fashionistas for adding new pieces to their wardrobes whilst standing up to fast fashion and its detrimental impact on the world. Previously buying second hand was seen as something only the cash strapped did, with charity shops being uncool, but with the help of people such as Mary Portas, giving pieces a second lease of life has become normal and expanded on the vintage culture with more and more people wanting to be individual. Before we discuss my foray into the pre-loved world lets clarify what the term means......

Preloved is an informal word that describes an item that was previously owned. Preloved is a euphemism, which is a milder way to say something to make it less harsh or blunt. Preloved is typically used to describe something for sale to avoid calling it used or second handDictionary.com

I love the term pre-loved, it sounds so much better & more refined than calling it second hand, especially when the item is designer. Up until this point, I have only ever dipped my toe in the pre-loved market finding the occasional piece in charity shops or Ebay, but my latest transaction is so much more than that. There are now many sites specifically for selling/buying beautiful pieces - sites like Vestiaire Collective, that showcase amazing fashion in need of a new home. A much more pleasant experience than your run of the mill transaction on Ebay, where you run the risk of receiving a faulty, damaged or god forbid fake item. Sites such as Vestiaire pride themselves in being a third party platform for genuine sellers to sell on their loved designer items, authenticating pieces before they arrive with their new owners. These sites are also ideal as they can sometimes be the only way to track down older/rarer items, especially limited edition colourways or prints. I became aware of the site after watching a video from Victoria @inthefrow, one of many bloggers/influences who work with these sites and showcase the best of the best available pre-loved.

I actually found my pre-loved piece on Instagram, after a friend of mine sent me a link to the Closet Detox UK, who just so happened to be selling my dream bag! Closet Detox UK is a London based detox service - "helping to reduce textile trash. Detox, Organise, Removal, Donate, Resell" @closetdetoxuk. They have so many amazing pieces, I just spotted a pair of Chloe Susannah boots that look amazing!!!

So onto my purchase.... I have been on the look out for this particular Mulberry bag for years....the black leather, medium Tillie satchel.

The Tillie was part of the SS11 Mulberry collection and has been the IT piece for me for years. I do already own one of these bags, an oversized version in cream tweed (bought in the sale), but sadly she isn't the most practical bag (especially with a toddler) so doesn't get used much, but I love everything about the style and detailing on this bag. I was in two minds at one point, about sending my cream bag to the Bag-Spa and getting her dyed black but I had a deep fear of it getting ruined! So finding this has made me so happy

A classic satchel shape, with top handle and gorgeous gold hardware, the perfect size to be worn on the shoulder, cross body as well as on the crook of the arm. It is also a great everyday size, ideal for all my essentials plus the odd car, dinosaur or tub of playdoh and because it is preloved I am a little less precious with her, because she has already been "broken in". The bag was exactly as described, no faults, a little wear on the hardware but far less than I expected considering she is nine years old.

So this bag originally retailed for around £900 and although I have been on the look out for a couple of years now, the cheapest I have ever found one, was about £300 but that was on Ebay, and I am not very trusting of sellers on there, especially when it comes to designer items...... going through a verified pre-loved retailer means that it has been authenticated and best of all this beauty was only £120. I know for some people that even this is still a lot to spend on a handbag, but this piece has such a place in my heart and it is a real treat to be able to purchase it, especially as this style of Mulberry is no longer in production. The transaction was conducted via Instagram direct message then once agreed, through Paypal (hello buyer protection), and although the item was sent Royal Mail 2nd class it arrived the next day! and was beautiful wrapped in tissue paper.

Overall I found this pre-loved process, to be a really positive experience and will definitely be doing it again, as I do believe that items should be loved for years, not worn once and thrown away. I also really love the idea of a piece having its own little story, its own history.

Have you ever bought a designer piece pre-loved? Any recommendations?

Falling for Pre-Loved

With most people taking the time to consider fashion a little more these days - either for sustainable reasons or the after effects of lockdown, making pieces in our wardrobes work hard is the easiest way to keep things fresh and not spend a fortune. Investing in key pieces that can be styled up in multiple ways for lots of different occasions is the goal. With that in mind, I have taken one of my favourite pieces from Mint Velvet and styled it up four different ways. *I am a style advisor for Mint Velvet, and I love to help my customers feel great, look amazing and enjoy the feeling of knowing they can pull together a look with little to no effort.

This shirt is a classic white shirt, with an oversized fit, longer in length with rolled up sleeves - perfect to wear alone or layered. I always recommend this shirt to customers in store as it really is so versitile.....as you will see from the below looks - giving you a casual daytime style as well as something a little more dressier for those elusive post-lockdown date nights.

All items featured in this post are available now instore or online at Mint Velvet.

1 shirt - 4 Ways - styling ideas

Outfit One

Shirt used in all looks - White Oversized shirt

Faux Leather leggings, Black Fedora Sparkle Trim Hat, Black Leather Cowboy Boots & Gold Charm Necklace

Utilising the longer length of the shirt, teaming it with leather look leggings - a staple for any Autumn/Winter season, gives it a modern take on rock chick chic. Adding a statement buckle boot (these are an amazing pair, perfect heel height for everyday and they look great with dresses as well as jeans), a classic fedora hat and a long charm necklace. Think 2020 boho styling. If the leggings are a little out of your comfort zone, this outfit would work just as well with a pair of skinny jeans.

Outfit Two

Khaki Cargo Trousers, Denim Jacket & Hailey Stone Trainers

Styled with these cargo trousers gives the shirt a much more casual feel, wear it tucked into the trousers to define your waist. Layering the denim jacket adds a little structure to the shoulders and the two tone trainers, with a splash of sparkle make it a great everyday look. I would wear this for a day out with my little boy - easy but still so stylish.

Outfit Three

Maryland Black Skinny Jeans, Cropped Leather Jacket, Debbie Biker Boots & Leopard Print Headband

A classic monochrome look, mixing the white shirt with black skinny jeans and a leather jacket - cropped to show off more of the shirt and highlight the waist. Teamed with the IT boot of the season a chunky biker boot, perfect for keeping your feet cosy whilst looking chic. The leopard print headband is just a nice pop of print to a very simple outfit. This outfit could also be layered up with a winter coat as the finishing touch when the temperature drops.

Outfit Four

Joliet Grey Skinny Jeans, Dusty Pink Cities Sweatshirt & Palmer White Velcro Trainers

My favourite look - Easy casual styling with the shirt layered under this gorgeous blush pink sweatshirt, with the sleeves rolled up. Teamed with a classic skinny jean (I have gone with grey but any colour would work) and my favourite new season trainers - Velcro is not just for kids anymore. This is the perfect everyday outfit....throw on a classic tote and your ready for the day.

Which of the four outfits would you choose?

Also worth noting that this shirt comes in other colours too.....check out the Mint Velvet website for the alternatives.

Wearing My Wardrobe

So after what feels like years, lockdown for me is over! I returned to one of my jobs on Wednesday and it was a weird experience but good to be getting back to somewhere near normal! Whilst I have found the last 15 weeks to be a very intense time, stuck in the house with a toddler really tests your patience to new levels, but one good thing to come out of lockdown has been rediscovering my style, forgotten items in my wardrobe and finding new ways to style them up....I have found myself reaching for things that have been in my wardrobe for years, pieces that I either haven't worn in so long or had totally forgotten I even owned.....sound familiar? Now in some cases this is because they were not practical with a baby and mum life trumps fashion (I know who am I!) but now little dude is older, independent and most importantly walking I have no excuses. I had already decided as a loose New Years resolution to try and not buy as much fast fashion and I was doing really well - hadn't bought anything new for two whole months (that's a lifetime to me!), but lockdown has really changed the challenge goalposts, actually making it easier as I can't just pop out to the shops. I have been so impressed with myself on just how much I have worn from my existing wardrobe - will say I have bought a few new pieces (it would be rude not to when H&M are having such an epic season!) but all the pieces have been items that I felt like I was missing, and that slot into and can be styled with many items I already own.

I have also found my photo style too, have always been a little bit awkward in outfit shots, favouring a good mirror selfie or from where I stand shot - but with the help of my amazingly patient husband I have found my spot in the garden and been practising my poses.....I actually look forward to taking a photo everyday, but totally now understand why bloggers take 100 photos for that perfect one!

So this post is going to look back at my favourite outfits from lockdown (yes I was a bit overdressed for chilling at home but it made me happy), how I styled up some of my oldest items and also share some history on my favourite pieces.....I love when items have a backstory/style memories.

So the outfits....my favourites
Wearing My Wardrobe: Playsuit
New Look playsuit, Primark tee, Mint Velvet necklace, New Look sandals, Hat from Turkey, Amazon Heart sunglasses

Starting off with a true summer outfit - this look deserves 2 photos....not only because it's cute but because up until now I would never have had my photo taken in shorts let alone a playsuit, but I seem to have found my happy place between style & my body. This playsuit was bought two summers ago during a heatwave. I chose to style it up with a basic white tee underneath, 90s style which makes it a cute summers day outfit and balances out the flesh on show. Sunnies are a daily staple but I also added my Panama hat to the outfit as it was a very hot day. The rose gold sandals are about 3 years old and my go to during the summer....they go with everything! This outfit really sums up my lockdown style, comfy but stylish. I needed outfits that looked cute but were easy enough to be running/crawling around after a very active toddler.....#mumstyle.

Wearing My Wardrobe: Swirl & Sparkle
H&M dress, Moto Denim Jacket & Primark Trainers  |  Primark Jacket, New Look dress, Converse high-tops, Accessorize straw tote

Next up two of my favourite dresses on repeat... The first, was the IT dress of last year, this tulle spotty dress is the perfect mood lifter, I felt like a total princess swishing around Sainsburys in it. I kept it casual though by throwing on my trusty black converse trainers and my Vintage Moto by Topshop denim jacket (yes I count it as vintage as I bought this my first year of uni, which means it is 16 years old and still looks fabulous).

The black boho dress was bought for a Christmas drinks party back in 2017 after I had bubba, I wanted something loose but still cute and this little beauty with its metallic thread fit the bill. A smock shape with fluted, floaty sleeves perfect for skimming the old mum tum. Looks great styled casually like this in the summer but also with tights & boots in the winter. Worn with my favourite khaki jacket, bought for my 30th birthday trip to Paris and still my go to with dresses & jeans. These hightop converse are technically new, I got them second hand, although not quite sure if I am cool enough to pull them off!

Wearing My Wardrobe: Dressing Up
New Look jumpsuit, New Look sandals & Amazon sunnies |  River Island vest, Primark skirt, Dune sandals

I would like to call these two looks, my dress up day outfits....no where to go but wanted to be a bit fancy! First up is the outfit I wore for my wedding anniversary (just a pizza party with my boys but nice to make an effort) a spotty midi skirt, that was bought a few years ago - I was drawn to the spots and the beautiful pleats, teamed with a cropped black jumper, perfectly french tucked into the elastic waistband. Now the shoes in this outfit have a sad story....I found them when looking for shoes for a friends wedding, not in my size but I tracked down the last pair in the UK and then when it came to the day, the typical British weather happened. Coral suede + rain + English countryside, not a good combo so they never got worn. Teamed with this skirt though they are gorgeous, so I got them out of the box for a special day.... a look to remember for post-lockdown.

Next this floral jumpsuit is one of my favourite pieces in my wardrobe, I bought it to wear to my sisters birthday barbecue two months after having little man, I wanted to feel like me but didn't fit into a lot of my pre-baby clothes yet. This was the best thing I ever bought!! Fit me back then, and still fits me now thanks to the adjustable waist - never before did I think I would ever find a flattering jumpsuit, but is the perfect shape for larger boobs and a mum tum. I love the dark floral too, not your typical girly print. Teamed with my rose gold sandals but worn with trainers during lockdown too.

Wearing My Wardrobe: From Where I Stand

One very obvious thing I noticed collecting my images for this post....I am obsessed with "from where I stand" style photos and especially these black Converse-esque trainers. Have worn them non stop and am so pleased with how versatile they are, especially as they are £6! I love to wear them with a really girly dress just to toughen up the look a bit. It also makes me realise just how much my style has changed since be becoming a mum....I very rarely wore trainers and now I live in them but by choice not just for practicality.

Wearing My Wardrobe: Green Floral
New H&M Dress, Topshop sandals  |  Primark Trainers, Cambridge satchel

Now breaking my rule slightly. This dress was a new addition, I was drawn to the beautiful print and it was a step outside of my comfort zone as I don't normally wear green but something about this makes me so happy & considering I have worn it every week of lockdown my cost per wear is already very low!! Accessories & shoes in both looks are all old favourites though. The sandals were an odd Christmas sale find years ago and I loved the fringing detail, for some reason they always remind me of something Carrie Bradshaw would wear. With a good block heel they are a great all day sandal and my go to heel. The Cambridge Satchel is a medium push lock and was a present from my hubby for my 30th birthday.....I love it so much I also have it in coral and black!

Wearing My Wardrobe: Summer dress
New H&M dress, Primark sandals, Primark sunglasses  |  Same dress, white New Look tee, @Tlmedit layered necklace, Primark trainers and tote bag

Another cheeky new addition, but this sundress was a must....only £17.99! and honestly the best summer dress I have bought in years. It fits beautifully and is so cool to wear even though it is black. Styled up with these zebra sandals (vintage Primarni darling) and oversized sunnies (a staple) but also layered over a white tee, with trainers and a cute summery tote....either way, easy summer style.

Wearing My Wardrobe: The Accessories

Now it wouldn't be a Glitter Fashionista post without discussing accessories. I am a total magpie for accessories and I have loved digging deep into my collection and wearing pieces that never normally leave the house. This is my current arm stack, all personal and a little bit boho...the Mama & Mark bracelets are from @loverubyross & my L♡VE bracelet is from @ezzys_wristcandy - two amazing sellers I found on Instagram, the rest are from Estella Bartlett. I love the colour and metal combination with a pop of black, perfect to wear everyday.

This headband is a gorgeous pink paisley print from New Look from 3 years ago - I don't wear headbands that often but I do love to add a pop of colour to a monochrome outfit. The heart sunglasses (which are new) are just a fun addition and I love them, so much so I went back and bought a tortoiseshell pair too...from Amazon of all places! The gorgeous pink Birkenstock style slides were a cheeky Bank Holiday find from TU clothing - but at £3.75! I had to have them! a nice upgrade from my standard pink Primarni flip flops and a great everyday shoe.

This "Wanderlust" tote bag was an impulse "Instagram made me do it" purchase, influenced by @hannahgale back in 2017 but I love it so much and always get compliments on it. I will admit I haven't used it very much as the last time I used it, was as an accidental hospital bag! I grabbed it when I headed to the maternity assessment unit, stuffed in my purse, magazines, bottle of water etc. Only expected to be there for a few hours.....nope came home with a baby!! but it was a nice pretty thing to look at in my room, just not the most practical! I have been using this so much in lockdown though, especially when I pop to the local shops - have actually not used a proper handbag in weeks!! The "Hello Sunshine" tote was a Primark find a few years ago and is another summer favourite, Primark make the cutest accessories and I find them to be better quality than the clothing.

Wearing My Wardrobe: The Bag

Adding this image in as I love it - this bag was a birthday gift from my in-laws back in 2014! I fell in love with the stripe and embellishment mix. Not the most practical but I have enjoyed using it to pop my purse, phone and keys in for a lockdown walk....will be making sure I use it more often, it is currently hung on my rail so I don't forget about it. I used to only carry big "Mary Poppins" bags but in the last two years have really discovered a love for something a little smaller.....plus a good excuse to carry less.

Now the rest of the outfits....
Below are the remainder of my "simpler" outfit photos - I wish I could discuss all of them in detail but if I did we would all be here forever (maybe even longer than lockdown!) but if you do want more information on any of the images featured in this post, head over to my Instagram....

Wearing My Wardrobe: My Outfits

Now the plan is to keep "wearing my wardrobe", limiting my fast fashion shopping.....and hopefully keep photographing the outfits.
Lets see now lockdown is over if this is as easy!

Wearing my Wardrobe

Dreaming of Dior

Dior has been one of my dream brands for a while but only in recent seasons have I really started to LOVE it. The 2019/2020 collections really impressed me - I think it was the use of beautiful neutral tulles and creating such sexy, yet ultra feminine looks. It may also be helped that two of my favourite fashionistas (Victoria @inthefrow & Lydia @lydiamillen ) have been spotted in many a Dior look. The mix of dark & edgy alongside the light, girly colour palette is so beautiful - a grown up modern day princess look.

Now although inspired by the collections, I am very sure that I could never pull of a Dior outfit (too many curves) but I would definitely invest in some accessories - the jewellery & bags collection of late have been gorgeous and much more thought-out. All are investment pieces but for the right item, totally worth it. So I had a good browse online (a lockdown habit of late #wishlistafterwishlist) on the Dior website last week  and rounded up my favourite items of the moment - all pieces I would invest in (if I had the money) and I wanted to share them all with you....

The Dior Tribal earring set would be top of my list, I love the mix of styles and how the pearl sits on the earlobe (I have a pair of pearl ball earrings from ASOS that remind me so much of these and I love them)… maybe mixed up with the ear crawler on my the other ear? #earparty. The bracelet set is so on trend right now but again quite classic especially in a simple colour like navy or black, and a nice inexpensive way to add Dior to your outfit. The lady Dior style handbag is for me very iconic but it doesn't scream designer (like say the Louis Vuitton branding does) - but the beautiful girly blush pink and wildflower print add that extra something to quite a classic shape. In the medium size you would able to use this as an everyday bag rather than saving for best, getting that cost per wear down to a reasonable level. Finally I included a bag strap because I love the idea of giving an older bag a makeover, adding a touch of designer but in a practical way plus you can swap it to match your outfit of the day, I love customisable fashion.

The below photos are just a small selection of Dior styled images that have caught me eye, all so feminine but with an tough edge. As per usual the beautiful Victoria from IntheFrow is featured heavily as for me she sums up everything about Dior that I love....

If money were no object what would you invest in?

I wanted to finish this post with an apology, for the amount of "wishlist" style posts of late. I have been on a limited spend over the last few months so there is a lot of stuff I would love to buy but am not letting myself, also just something about the lockdown has me scrolling through the internet and I just keep finding pretty things, which in the current situation are bringing me joy & I wanted to share them.....hope you don't mind too much x

Kate Spade: Pastel Party

I have been a Kate Spade fan for years, but haven't loved anything enough to want to purchase for a while now but this seasons bags have knocked it out of the park for me and my credit card is itching to come out. The introduction of the brands new Twist lock last year sparked my interest but with more & more styles featuring this iconic fastening being introduced, I have become obsessed! The new season pastel palette is just gorgeous, maybe not the most classic but I already own a simple black Kate Spade so why not brighten up my day with one of these candy coloured leather lovelies (but most styles do come in the traditional black & navy if pastels are too much for your wardrobe).

One thing I love about this brand is the quality of the leather and materials used but at a reasonable price point...not cheap, still an investment in my eyes but not four figures like a lot of designer brand bags. I already have two bags from Kate Spade in my collection and they are both just as gorgeous today as the day I bought them...I have a black medium Park Avenue Beau (bargain find at Bicester Village) & a two tone Cedar Street Hayden (birthday present to myself), both neutral colours and a classic tote silhouette.

Now I wanted to share the four styles that are top of my wishlist from the latest collection....all a little different but with the twist lock in common and all coming in at under £400.

Kate Spade: Nicola Twistlock small top handleKate Spade: Nicola Twistlock small top handle
Kate Spade: Nicola Twistlock medium shoulderKate Spade: Romy medium satchel
If the handbag fairy is reading this.....one of each please.

Now I need to narrow it down to one ideally if I am gonna save up. Currently leaning towards the lilac medium shoulder bag, as it is the most practical but still stylish especially in the gorgeous pastel lilac shade (hate that I've become that person who considers practicality first in my purchases....miss being frivolous #mumlife). Although I love the Romy wicker I feel like this would be a little more limiting in terms of styling outside of the summer season and is maybe not quite as classic as I want for the price, but she is a beauty.

Which style would you choose.... leave me a comment below x

Something a little more thought provoking this week on the blog: a topic that has started some big conversations particularly within the world of fashion....Sustainable fashion. In no way a new topic, I think the world has been aware that fast fashion is having a negative effect on the planet for a while now, but the BBC documentary "Fashion's Dirty Secrets", shown last year, presented by Stacey Dooley has opened Pandoras box and now it is something that everyone has taken note of and some major changes are afoot. I recently watched a great YouTube video on buying sustainable fashion, by the amazing IntheFrow which really made me think about my own relationship with fast fashion and inspired this post....

Before we dive in and discuss - What is Sustainable Fashion?

"Sustainable fashion is a movement and process of fostering change to fashion products and the system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. Sustainable fashion concerns more than addressing fashion textiles or products. It comprises addressing the whole system of fashion. This means dealing with interdependent social, cultural, ecological and financial systems. It also means considering fashion from the perspective of many stakeholders - users and producers, all living species, contemporary and future dwellers on earth." - Wikipedia
I think the fashion industry, teamed with the phenominon that is social media has a lot to answer for - it has the power to do so much good, but on the flip side has also started to do some damage. Most influncers are all about showing us new and pretty things, encouraging us to buy (who hasn't bought at least one thing from a post you've seen on Instagram???) and that mentality teamed with fast fashion so readily avaliable, means people are buying at an alarming rate. Entry price point retailers such as Primark are thriving because of how cheap pieces are - who wants to spend £50 on a dress for their holiday when they can pick one up for £13, this along with celebrity collaborations & endorsements makes that new Saturday night outfit affordable and achieveable. Some people take this to extremes: I recently served a customer and we got chatting about how she is trying to buy less and how a friend of hers will happily buy an ENTIRE new wardrobe for every holiday she goes on from Primark and will simply leave it all in the hotel once the holiday is over! I know its cheap but how crazy is that - I am sure we all like to get a few new bits for our holiday but literally wearing once and then throwing away is a prime example of how crazy fast fashion has got and that things need to change.

I think on the British highstreet Primark is the store that most people will buy fast fashion from, with dirt cheap prices, crazy trends are so accessible and if you only wear once so be it. Now I will admit I love me a bit of Primarni, however over the last few years my consumption of cheap clothes has decreased, I still buy PJ's, accessories and kids clothing in there (little man grows to quick, it seems daft to spend lots of money on basics like joggers & tshirts) but I can't remember the last time I bought clothes for myself - the quality over quantity mentality has definetly kicked in for me. Don't get me wrong though, I will not be rushing out and only buying pieces from sustainable brands (mainly because those who are truly sustainable are also very expensive!) but I will be trying to make a conscious decision to not buy into mass produced garments so much and embrace the wardrobe I have.

My first challenge is to tackle my wardrobe and split it into Keep, Recycle and Throw away, so that I know exactly what I have to work with, then trying to follow the below tips to keep my wardrobe as sustainable as it can be....

6 TIPS TO BECOMING MORE SUSTAINABLE....

1. Wear you wardrobe // Such a simple start to cutting down on buying into fast fashion. You probably have many things in there you haven't worn in ages - we all do! So dig them out, style them up and give them a new lease of life. Fashion is about showing your personality, something you can't do as well if everyone is wearing the same Zara dress or Topshop boots! I have so many pieces in my wardrobe that I love but don't wear, so actually quite excited to try out some new combinations and remember don't be afraid to dig out those unexpected pieces, like wear sequins during the day.

2. Recycle // Once you are done with a garment, don't just bin it (unless it is truly unwearable) take it to your local charity shop/clothing bank or sell it on to someone else to enjoy. One womans trash is another womans treasure....share the love.

3. Charity Shops // Branch out and try something new. I used to shop in charity shops a lot when I was at Uni and I had forgotten the thrill you can get when you find something exciting and unexpected. Perhaps something designer or from a brand you love but can't afford. If you know where to look this is a great sustainable way to add newness to your wardrobe and give a garment a second chance at life. My only advice would be give yourself time to rummage, you will need to dig deep to find the gems.

4. Swap with friends // The perfect excuse to get the girls over, share some prosecco and get some new clothes at the same time. Obviously a little more limiting in terms of sizing, but worth a try.

5. Head online // Regularly check Ebay, Facebook marketplace and sites such as Depop, where you can find some many great pieces secondhand, this is something I do a lot - I can often find pieces that I wasn't able to find in stores or that sold out quickly, usually in good condition at a fraction of the origional price. I find this a useful resource especially for brands that are usually out of my price range.

6. Be consious when you buy // Can you honestly imagine wearing this new top 50-100 times? this is the question you need to ask yourself when buying new. These days I like to use the rule of three when I shop....I have to be able to mentally style the item at least 3 ways within my exisiting wardrobe, if I can I am allowed to buy, if not then put it back. The only time I will deviate from this rule is if it something special that I have fallen head over heels for....this doesnt happen often so i allow myself. You need to feel joy for every piece in your wardrobe for it to be an item you will keep for years.

And finally making your own clothes.....but lets be honest most of us do no have the time or skills to be creating our own wardrobe, but if you can - do it! Sustainable & unique.

~ ♡ ~
To finish off this post, I wanted to share just how possible it is to live your wardrobe.....
I met a customer in Mint Velvet recently who fully truly embodies the sustainable ethos I believe we should all be aiming for. She is in her late 60's and is one of the chicest ladies I have ever met. I got chatting with her after complimenting her outfit....head to tone in shades of gorgeous camel with a stunning classic Burberry trench draped effortlessly on her shoulders. She was more than happy to share that her trench, along with most of the pieces she was wearing were actually charity shop finds. She rarely purchases new items of clothing, opting to rummage and find gorgeous gems in the charity shops around the UK. She does buy new, but only when she needs to, prefering to really shop her wardrobe and find new combinations for pieces she has had in there for years. She is also a strong advocate for continuing the life cycle of a garment, and will always donate when she is done with a piece. This approach is what I would love to see more people adopt, even if it was only for a few pieces....I take a lot of items to the charity shop but very rarely find gems that I want to rehome, but that is going to be my fashion mission for this year.

A longer post than I normally write, but I hope it has been food for thought and has left you thinking about your wardrobe and whether you could make more sustainable decisions when you buy new pieces. Not aimed to shame people for shopping in Primark (I still do), or make you buy only sustainable designer pieces, but to make you think a little more before buying lots of cheap fast fashion without a thought to how it affects the enviroment and the world we live in. While consumers can make a difference through purchasing habits, retailers & brands have also got to step up to the plate and make changes - this can be as small as looking at their delivery packaging (some of the highend retailers give you the choice to recieve your order in reduced packaging, so no unnecessary plastic), working with factories to ensure ethical process are adhered too, as well as considering eco friendly fabrics, even recycled fibres to produce garments. I believe it is much harder for established brands to make changes to how they have always done things, so it is even more important that new emerging brands are set up with this sustainable ethos behind them from the start, so that going forward the fashion industry is aware, informed and hopefully making a difference to the world that our children & grandchildren will grow up in..

Would love this to open up a dialogue and hear back from readers about their thoughts on this topic and any tips you have for making the most out of fashion...

My Style Evolution

A few weeks I made the mistake of disappearing down the rabbit hole that is Instagram and after scrolling back to the begining of my feed, I realised just how much my style has changed over the last 7 years....not only in fashion, but in photography & filters and also how that has impacted on this blog. Obviously my love for fashion began well before 2013 but as that is the year I began documenting it, that felt like a natural place to start - although I am sure my friends would have lots to say about my style pre Instagram! Some things have remainded the same though - I am still to this day a big lover of the "From where I stand" pose as well as a good mirror selfie but the quality of my shots has most definatley improved. It is also interesting to see just how much life & work can really impact on fashion & style.

~2013~

My Style 2013
The start of Instagram...I think we will call this my "chameleon" phase, I cannot believe just how many bright colours and prints I had in my wardrobe back in 2013! colours that I wouldn't ever wear now. I think my style in this year was fuelled by starting a new job and wanting to reinvent myself in a new role. There were lots of dresses (mostly short), layered up with leggings, big statement necklaces (the kind that hurt your neck, they were so big!), lots of bold Kat Slater leopard print and I loved my faux fur collar. I think my style was actually very complicated, lots of things going on in one outfit but I was confident and happy. This was the year I purchased my first designer bag - my cream Mulberry Tillie tote so I wore it everywhere, getting my moneys worth out of my purchase. Most of my wardrobe was from Topshop with a few ASOS and New Look items mixed in.

~2014~

My Style 2014
2014 seems to have been more about tailoring, clearly still loving a dress but have smartened them up with a blazer or structured jacket. My colour palette became a monochrome base with bright pops, pastels and whole lot of bold floral prints. My favourite outfit (that I wore to death) would have to be my topshop vintage floral wrap dress, grey & gold belt, black blazer and my faithful brown slouchy boots - I felt like a total girl boss in this and it was my go to meeting outfit. This is the year I bought my first Kate Spade bag, a black Beau and I wore it everyday. Spent a lot of time tottering around in heels at work, really expanding my shoe collection beyond my comfort zone. Most pieces still from Topshop & ASOS but also a lot of H&M, a store I hadn't really shopped from before, other than basic tees.

~2015~

My Style 2015
I think 2015 was the year my style aesthetic really began to change. It was a tough year for me personally, as I suffered a miscarriage, and really felt like I needed a change. A lot more monochrome & denim mixed up with pops of colour & print through jewellery and scarves. Trainers began to appear outside of the gym, teamed with dresses & skirts, which I never expected. My outfits became a lot simpler, less fussy and more classic. Embraced the need for a good Breton stripe tee and hemlines dropped, favouring a midi over a mini. Gone are the leggings, embracing my bare legs and mourning the death of my faithful slouchy brown boots (am still on the look out for a replacement pair). Fedora love began. Interestingly stopped shopping in Topshop - realised I no longer liked the clothes or fit in them! so most of my wardrobe was from ASOS, New Look or Dorothy Perkins, with Primark starting to catch my eye.

~2016~

My Style 2016
The first year I actually featured myself on the blog - more confident posing and happier with my style. Another big style shift in 2016... much more pulled together and cohesive, with more investment pieces. Switched my regular denim to black skinnies (and haven't changed since) which I found more flattering for my figure. Fell in love with the black & white printed dress above from H&M and wore so much teamed with sandals and boots. My whole ethos for dressing really changed gear - I started to embrace the high/low rule of dressing. Discovered the Cambridge Satchel Company and added two styles to my bag collection - both cute but actually a lot smaller than I have used before, helping me to streamline what I carried daily. Finally I turned 30 which had an impact, unexpectedly, I felt the need to embrace a simpler style to start my thirties. Most of my pieces this year were from New Look & H&M, ASOS had started to loose its sparkle for me (most pieces too young) and I branched out into new brands (for me) such as Zara.

~2017~

My Style 2017
This was an very odd style year for me, half of the year I was pregnant and dressing a bump is actually a really tough challenge, whilst the remainder of the year I was a new mum (regularly covered in baby spitup). Both ends of the spectrum challenged my style. I would say 2017 is the year I fully embraced trainers, Primark became my go to store (no point spending loads on clothes that would only fit for a few months) and my style became a lot more casual and easy. It was all about finding my mummy style. Sadly swapped my heels for fancy flats, and my wardrbobe became practical over pretty. Very much a year of using what I had and creating new looks. Most of my pieces were New Look or Primark but almost all of my maternity styles were actaully from ASOS, an unexpected source. Read more about Maternity fashion esssentials here.

~2018~

My Style 2018
I like to call this, the year of reinvention, starting back to work and finding my style groove outside of my mum uniform - a jeans and tees combo. Working for a fashion brand, with a uniform allowance really helped, as it gave me the opportunity to challlenge my norm and push the style boundaries. Although not back to my bold colourful self of 2013 I really did feel I was getting my style back. Embracing a few items I had vowed never to wear in public - shorts & a backpack, but your outlook on style changes with a little person around, it is more about comfort and practicallity than style. I also became much more relaxed about my body, more confident getting my legs and arms out (areas I have struggled with before). Still wearing my trusty black skinny jeans and trainers but adding in a lot of broiderie anglais tops, statement boots and sooooo many stripes! Also found some new flat styles that I love - pointed leopard slingbacks and Chanel style espadrilles - chic but comfy. Most of my pieces were from New Look, Primark, H&M or Mint Velvet.

~2019~

My Style 2019
The present day - I have really starting to feel good with my style, feeling much more confident which has been a struggle since bubba, and am so much happier to upload mirror selfies. Embracing a "wear what I own" approach to dressing, trying to reduce my fast fashion purchases (so far all I buy is essentials plus a few cheeky accessories) and taking my time to find items I truly love and can wear everyday, no more "for best". Still basing my outfits around my faithful black skinnies but trying to add something new through tops and accessories. The leopard print is also back! but in a much more grown up way and not quite so full on.

So there we are, my style journey....

~The Blog~

Love this collection of shots, it really shows the design evolution of the blog, 2013 to the present format. I am so proud of my little corner of the internet and how much it has changed....so much more modern & streamlined, without the clutter of widgets, which I was adament I needed back in 2013. Along with more interactive elements that have been possible with all the technological advances - including my Shopstyle Collective wishlist, which also allows me earn whilst sharing my favourite pieces. I also love the sleeker, cleaner format which allows my imagery to do the talking.
