Fashion Week
As a self confessed lover of fashion, fashion week (or as it probably should be called - fashion month) has always been an exciting time of the year, but over the last ten years, it has really changed for me....
As a fashion marketing student at university, I was obsessed with the whole event, and in an attempt to feel part of it attending as many London Fashion Weekends as I could, but in reality these events are not even remotely like the shows, more like the grown up equivalent of the Clothes Show but a way for me to be surrounded by other fashionistas and experience/buy into new brands. I especially became mesmerized by Mulberry - back in the days of Emma Hill I loved the brand, more specifically its aesthetic and quirky spin on the catwalk show (who else would feature gnomes or monsters). I even managed to track down campaign postcards & brand books on ebay from several of the collections and still love to flip through them, remembering the British brand in what I believe was their its heyday. With this interest became brand specific posts, rounding up details & inspirations, showcasing my favourite looks from the catwalk as well as lots of brand imagery. I really miss the whimsical brand shots Mulberry used to create - my favourite being from AW12, which was inspired by the Maurice Sendak’s book Where The Wild Things Are. Once i graduated, these "show posts" became less and less as life took over, but also with the introduction of social media the shows became a lot more accessible so i didn't feel the need to write about them anymore. Until recently i still managed to write a couple of posts per season - usually for my favourite designers - the amazing Sophia Webster, shoe goddess extraordinaire and the gorgeously quirky Anya Hindmarch but since having a baby, these again have lapsed somewhat. I had planned to get back on the horse this season but after discovering that there would be no Sophia Webster presentation this year (imminent baby arrival trumps fashion) i haven't had as much enthusiasm.....but keep your eyes peeled as there may be a cheeky Anya Hindmarch round up, as i cannot resist her exquisite accessories.
So what now?
Whilst I have fallen out of love with the fashion week of old, I still enjoy the spectacle and if I ever got the opportunity to go to a show....you better believe I would be there with bells on!!! Wanting to be part of fashion week was a big part of my student days but was so exhausting, especially as i didn't live in London - and would have be even more so if i had actually gone to any shows....it seems like a glamorous event to attend but more and more in recent years, fashionistas have pulled back, to just a hand full of shows as it is an impossibly grueling week of basically running around London as no two shows are in the same location. With the technology innovations of recent years, with apps such as Twitter & Instagram, being able to watch other bloggers content has helped to relive this pressure and allows fashion to be enjoyed again and in some cases shopped instantly! #fastfashion #thefutureoffashion
For me Fashion week is now all about street style and taking inspiration from fabulous ladies to use in my own everyday styling. I find there is something very relaxing about scrolling through beautiful outfit imagery and using this to inspire me, especially whilst i have been finding my fashion groove again after having bubba.

What Fashion Week means to me....

A collection best summed up as 1940s-showgirl-meets-WW2-pilot, with Amelia Earhart featuring on the mood board alongside embroidered military badges, flight jackets and sequins....all about strong women. I love the clear story behind the collection; the "world war workwear" element with the military inspirations, badging and soft tailoring mixed with true old school Hollywood glamour.
Pieces: Soft tailoring alongside sharp double breasted jackets, belted jumpsuits and coats with shimmering metallic pinstripes. Shearling Aviator jackets and oversized trenches layered over looks. Beautiful prints emulating starry night skies in pussybow midi length dresses. With all looks finished off with printed neckerchiefs, waisted gold medallion belts and boxing boots - sports lux juxtaposed against full on glamour. The attention to detail on the cocktail dresses especially is phenomenal....if only i had an occasion to wear such a piece!
Colour Palette: Chanelling the era of film noir; shades of venom, ivy and moss greens, moonbeam, slate and silver greys, sprinkled with ochre and soft pink hues.

I think my favourite look from the collection would have to be the black & silver cut out sequin paneled cocktail dress (#7 above). Something about the mix of fabrics and intricate panels is beautiful, a very sexy yet covered up dress. Really reminds me of old Hollywood and would be amazing teamed with a black knee high stiletto boot and clutch. At a mere £1,495 i'll take two!

Mulberry appears to be doing its own thing this fashion week - everyone else is showcasing Fall/Winter 18, but the British heritage brand has chosen to unveil SS18 instead, with a see now, buy now opportunity, with the collection available online straight after the show had finished #Beyondheritage.
Colour Palette: A very wide array of colours in the collection this season - dusty yellow, mustard, vibrant field green, faded blush, fuschia, red, cobalt and antique blue - all the colours of the rainbow!
The Finer Details: Frills and ruffles across clothing and as detailing on bags, chunky gold hardware, flowing fabrics, sequins, statement jewelled embellishments, clashing deck chair stripes, slouchy silhouetes, English ditsy florals, polka dots and very bold clashing colour combos. One element i did not like was the very odd head gear that the models were wearing..half were wearing what looked like oversized quality street wrappers, the other in huge flying saucers! Very bizarre.
An odd collection overall, but the best i have seen from Johnny Coca so far. Whilst i am still not sure about the clothing side of the collection, there were some beautiful fabrics and prints used but in odd clashing combinations. The handbags however were up to the brands usual standard, made from luxurious leathers in a rainbow of colours with new "families" emerging from the popular Amberley satchel - the Seaton & Marloes to name two, all featuring the new iconic lock detail. Although the collection wasn't entirely my cup of tea, there were as usual a few pieces that caught my eye and that i would love to add to my wardrobe, mainly bags as that is what i associate with the Mulberry brand but this season two items of clothing have snuck on my wishlist...

Most of the new bags are over £1000 and that really puts me off, don't get me wrong anything above £50 is a lot but four figures for a bag, even one hand crafted in Britian.....where's my lottery ticket!

For Autumn Winter 2017, Webster transformed the basement of Soho record shop "Phonica" into an ice-cold winter wonderland complete with a giant igloo bubble. What better backdrop for the chilling but beautiful "I scream for Ice Queens" collection. Embracing the traditional Sophia Webster take on fashion week, the venue was decked out to tell a story. With towering models - bundled up like the abominable snowman, with super furry winter boots or like they had stepped straight out of Narnia, adorned with mystic crowns of shimmering jewels and ice inspired crystals, surrounded by the fairytale collection of shoes and bags.
"The collection is inspired by Frozen, because I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, so Elsa was the main inspiration. And Harbin ice-festival in China which is a life-size iced village that they build every year. They light it up at night – it’s like a magical, colourful ice kingdom. And the main square there is called Sophia square – so it’s destined to be!" - quote taken from Marie Claire interview.
A pastel take over with icy lilacs, baby pinks, pale shades of blue and lots of white, set against silvery metallics and sumptuous furs. A combination of textures adding extra depth to the pieces - velvet, glitter, crystals, pearls and smooth supple leathers to name a few - with these delicate details flowing through into the room decor and model outfits.
I really enjoyed the softer side to this collection, especially all the beautiful shades of pastel pinks but also the slightly more simplified styling (more wearable styles), this was a nice change of pace from the designer. My favourite pieces would have to be tiara heels, combing beautiful beading and pearls with the pale pink velvet upper and the typically ornate heel. I also really liked this years take on the sneaker, a very practical piece but given that Sophia twist to make it both feminine, functional yet still a statement.
Finally the Glacier sandal bootie (below) with dramatic starburst crystals was hands down my favourite pair of the whole collection - something very dark and mysterious but beautiful about them, love the drama!

For me Anya Hindmarch is all about the accessories, although some of the clothing is beautiful and luxurious, it is the bags in particular that always inspire me and this seasons collection is no exception.
I love the opulence of this collection - from the gorgeous colour palette of rich burgundy and emerald green, interspersed with shots of yellow, baby pink and teal (not the traditional colours of winter) - to the variety of texture and unexpected elements of detailing. Colourful fur, knitted shorts and leather trims/embellishments dotted across the 38 looks within the show, adding to the wintery luxury and fun - although I will say the only part I was not so taken by was the socks and furry slides combination! I was a big fan of the leather work in the SS17 collection and was so pleased to see it back for another season. The intricate braiding and "paperchain" style straps adorning the classic bag silhouettes, add something new to a relatively simple accessory. I also love that some of the touches I have grown to know and love from Anya Hindmarch are still seen, the whimsical keychains and cartoon eyes, that sit perfectly aside the new.
Of all the pieces in the collection, the one item that has made my lust list is this satchel. Crinkled metallic leather and soft suede, in a gorgeous shade of teal, with a paper chain handle and pieced leather dragonfly motif. An exquisite piece of craftsmanship that would look amazing styled with my favourite navy wool coat.

The moment i saw this rainbow, sequin jumpsuit complete with cape, i knew this was going to be a special collection. Feminine and soft but with dramatic pops and a powerful palette of summery pastels mixed with bold shades of the rainbow. A collection of simple, but very wearable silhouettes that let the detailing do all the talking.
Beautiful surrealist prints on silk and chiffon, tapestry jacquard, eclectic stripes layered with folk inspired prints and stitch work- a very colourful and textured collection. Exquisite eveningwear pieces adorned with iridescent sequins and whimsical flowers, with lashings of embellished tulle and organza in a rainbow spectrum of soft colours channeling the spirit of dreamcatchers. A fashion week show fit for a modern day princess!
These are the nine looks i loved the most - all styles i could see myself wearing. Although i love the whole collection, i don't have many occasions to wear such ornate pieces, but the Almond mix charm skirt (below) is just so wearable but still has the fun and romantic essence of the collection. Teamed with a silky cami and sandals, this would make a perfect addition to my summer wardrobe.
The main thing that caught my eye in this collection is simply the level of intricate detailing in each piece....just look at how much has gone into just the waistband and sleeves on the Chimera Top and Almond Mix Wildflower Skirt, simply beautiful.

The moment i saw this rainbow, sequin jumpsuit complete with cape, i knew this was going to be a special collection. In true Webster style the collection is made up of brand classics (like the Chiara), updated in new fabrications and colours alongside some gorgeous new silhouettes. Bright colours, monochromes and lashings of metallics (gold & rose gold) mixed with exquisite prints - peacock, birds of paradise and tropical leaves. A broad collection, of heart shaped perspex heels, muled slides, mid heights and chunky curved platforms, all on display in gilded cages.
The standout styles for me are the black/white humbug striped heels, with the rose gold hardware and monochrome tassels along with the Effie platform, which has the most amazing tri-print silk upper (lead image on this post). I also love that on some of the collections key looks a lower alternative is offered, so everyone can join the conga line and strut their stuff in the most amazing shoes.
Interspursed with the glitz and glamour are some great sneaker styles - still incorporating the flair of Webster design through prints and the embellished butterflies but offer something for the less girly girls out there. How cute would these tropical sneakers be on tube for your daily commute!
No detail has been spared in this presentation, from the gilded cages showcasing the shoes and models, to the braided ropes and tropical plants. This kind of attention to detail really brings the collection to life along with the soulful Motown music playing in the background and the flamboyant models, dressed in bold feathers like tropical birds or chilling out in gold cages dressed like go-go girls from the 60's.
And if all this wasn't enough excitement for one week, Sophia has also designed the London Fashion Week tote bag featuring the beautiful peacock print from the collection. - wish i was going just to get one of these!

I like to think of this as the leather work equivalent of a mathematical equation."

The collection colour palette was based around pastel/sorbet shades of coral, yellow, lilac, pistachio and off white with brighter bold pops of mustard, lime green and intense orange. A delightful new take on the traditional spring summer colours typically seen - this mixed with the unusual textured neoprene offered something new and exciting.
Of the 40 looks in the show, these were my favourites - three amazing style coats. A simple longer length cut with a belt to cinch in the waist, bold solid colour with statement shoulder detailing what isn't to love? The only part of these looks i am not so mad about are the shoes...i love the quirky touches that are synonymous with the Hindmarch brand but furry fried egg flip flops are just a little too bizarre for me.
So onto my favourite part of the show, in fact any fashion week show...the bags! If i had to choose only one, to add to my SS17 wishlist, it would have to be the lilac/white box bag (largest image above). I was immediately drawn to the simple shape, intricate woven straps, touch of silver glitter and all those pockets.
In a similar style to the clothing, the bags are quite classic, simple silhouettes but all given that added Hindmarch touch through colour, texture and hardware. Supple leathers, touches of metallic, statement zips, mosaic tiles, decoupage style embellishment made up of colourful circles, chunky hardware and ornate woven leather straps. And if that wasn't enough, all manner of fun keyrings - colourful pentagon cubes, googly eyed purses, furry fried eggs and rainbows.

“The collection is totally inspired by my favourite Tim Burton movie Beetlejuice, and the character Winona Ryder plays, Lydia Deetz. "She is the muse for the collection, that’s the character that models are embodying. Then we have the corpse bride, who at the end of the film disintegrates into butterflies.” Sophia Webster
Nothing like we have seen from her before, Sophia Webster is normally an uber girly designer, however she retained the quirky touches she is known for but added a touch of gothic princess to this seasons collection. With classics we know and love, such as the butterfly heels and slogan bags updated to fit the dark and brooding theme alongside plenty of new styles to tempt us to the dark side and i have to say, i loved it.
The first element of the collection is the black and gold pieces. Lots of sleek stiletto shapes with butterflies in laser cut leather and mesh panels giving a very dark romance to the styles, yet keeping the femininity we have come to expect from her designs. My favourites would have to be the top image - the black mesh & velvet open toe boot, with back zip, lace up detail and gorgeous rose gold hardware - a true statement boot.
Next up sumptious brocade uppers and jewel encrusted heels, these three would add a touch of opulence to any outfit. I love the simplicity of the flat MJ style, mixing a simple shoe with amazing textures without it being to overpowering and again those boots are amazing and would make any everyday outfit pop with style.
This element of the collection is more what we are used to from Webster - metallic's, pastel shades and lots of floral/butterfly embellishment. A beautiful colour palette and detailing - although i do find the floral knee high stilettos a little much, but i love the ankle version as the rainbow colours are amazing. The see through boots with butterfly's adorning the cuff and down the foot are gorgeous and a different take on the traditional ankle boot - which seems to be a key shape in this collection.
More sparkles this time with a dramatic red velvet upper and jeweled soles - a great combination, could see these being the perfect Christmas party shoe styled with a LBD. Again love the simple flat MJ style with a touch of sparkle on the low block heel, perfect for pairing with your favourite skinny jeans.
A smaller collection of bags this time round, but all as beautiful as their shoe counterparts. Which would you go for - a sparkly box clutch or a statement slogan? Think i would have to chose the black and rose gold chain bag as my favourite - i am a sucker for anything rose gold and i love the simple shape.
Finally the centre piece of this years presentation was the "corpse bride" in her stunning wedding dress designed by Edward Meadham of Meadham Kirchhoff and the accompanying accessories. Intricate mesh laced heels and a "Wifey for lifey" vintage style clutch perfectly completed the look - makes me a little sad i am already a wifey, would have loved these shoes for my wedding day.
